Marco Polo has called the city the first place were humans have started to live together. And really if you walk trough the streets of old town varanasi you feel like pushed back in ancient times. Narrow roads with tousands of people pushing their way to the shrine of Lord Visvanatha (Lord Shiva) the presidental Deity of this City, you can see that even animals are do worship Him here. Big Bulls blocking the stiff lane, as Nandi (the carrier of Lord Shiva) would check who is allowed to visit His Lord and who is not. Dogs are everywhere and as we know Lord Shiva worshipped in Varanasi is also the Lord of the animals - Lord Bhairava - always shown with a Dog. From the Manikarnika Ghat the famous burning Ghat of humans, were the fire never extinguish... one gets the barbeque smell - but remember that is not the grassland were you do picnic with family...
